wound care after surgery

after surgery wound care guidelines
The following steps should be taken to help speed up the healing process and help prevent infection for wound care after surgery. While these are general recommendations, always discuss wound care after surgery with your doctor.

  1. Leave the bandage in place for 24 hours, remove the day after surgery, unless otherwise advised.
  2. Cleanse the wound twice daily with a gentle soap and water using a cotton swab to remove any dried blood or crust.  Pat dry gently and apply a few drops of skin solution.™ Cover with a band-aid or non-stick bandage. Avoid using ointments containing neomycin (Neosporin) as they may cause redness or itching in some people. The first day after surgery the wound may bleed a little or seep a small amount of clear fluid.
  3. Two days after surgery it’s usually all right to take a shower and allow the wound to get wet. Keep the wound covered when bathing and afterward clean as directed above, applying skin solution and a dry bandage.
  4. Studies show that wounds covered with a dressing heal faster than uncovered wounds. It is an old wives tale that uncovered wounds heal faster.
  5. Applying skin solution 2 – 3 times daily should be a part of your wound care after surgery regiment to help healthy skin development.

Note: If  the skin around the wound becomes red, swollen and painful you may have an infection. Call your doctor.

how long does it take to heal a wound?
In healthy patients following the wound care after surgery, most wounds heal within two weeks. If you have health problems such as diabetes or a weakened immune system, or are on certain drugs, such as steroids or chemotherapy drugs your healing will probably take longer.

Wounds on the face usually take one to two weeks to heal. Wounds on the arms, trunk and upper legs take about three weeks. Wounds on the lower legs, especially in people over forty, can take up to 3 months to heal.

can I speed up the healing process?
To help speed and assist your body in healing during your wound care after surgery eat a nutritious diet high in vitamin C, protein, and zinc–all are known to promote wound healing. Continue using skin solution 2 – 3 times daily for your wound care after surgery as it contains naturally occurring minerals, proteins, vitamins and antioxidants. skin solution is lab tested to be antibacterial, which helps the healthy skin stay healthy.

The sooner you start using skin solution for your wound care after surgery, the happier your skin will be. Consider the Mom who started using skin solution when her son cut open his finger and got stitches, “the nurse who took out the stitches one week later was amazed at how his skin had recovered–and now he has no scar.”  Additionally, many women who’ve dealt with breast cancer have remarked how they have virtually no scaring from reconstruction.

Especially when it comes to healing, give your skin what it needs so it can do what it does best–heal itself.
